“Fable” is a song by Gigi Perez about the death of her sister, exploring how grief impacts her life, and questioning religion in the face of death. The line, “cause you believe doesn’t mean that it’s there,” criticizes those who practice religion but can’t accept that other religions can exist at the same time as their own. Just because you believe in your own religion doesn’t mean it’s there for someone else, and that’s okay. Overall, the song is able to express how grieving the death of someone who meant so much feels, especially when you struggle with the idea of religion for whatever the reason. At the end of the song, Perez sings, “I dream of eternal life,” hoping that she’ll be able to see her sister again in the afterlife even if she doesn’t believe in it herself. I don’t believe in religion or an afterlife, so coming to terms with my father’s death probably looked very different for me than for most people. I got the most comfort out of knowing that he was finally able to sleep without suffering. I know I won’t get to see him in another life, and that’s okay. The life we had was enough, although it was cut short.
