“No One Is Alone” directly reflects my feelings about loss and grief. It was written by Stephen Sondheim for the musical Into the Woods. It’s sung after many people have died, specifically the mothers of two children, Little Red and Jack. Cinderella sings to Little Red and the Baker sings to Jack about how, although people will “leave you halfway through the woods” (the “woods” is a metaphor for life), it doesn’t mean you’re alone. There are so many other people who will be there for you, even when you feel like no one is left. It also discusses that you need to make sure to reflect on how other people perceive the world. They sing, “while we’re seeing our side, maybe we forgot: they are not alone.” It also discusses that we need to push away our judgements and preconceived notions about everyone we know. They sing, “witches can be right, giants can be good,” and then remind us that, “you decide what’s right, you decide what’s good.” I think it’s just a beautiful song about grief and loss and community and reflection. The song reprises shortly after when the Baker’s dead wife sings it to him, reminding us that even the people who have left are never really gone.
